Description

Max Hoffman convinced BMW that if they built a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz 300SL, he would sell it profitable in the United States. The BMW was intended to fill the gap between the affordable sports cars like the triumph and MG and the exclusive cars like the Mercedes-Benz 300SL and Ferrari 250 GT California. Though, BMW couldn’t achieve their target price, for what the BMW 507 was even more expensive than the 300SL. BMW found itself in a financial difficult situation and almost went bakrupt. At the end of the day, BMW recovered from this “failure” and the 507 even became a true flagship in the whole history of automotive.

In the ‘50s BMW disposed over all fundamental ingredients which would make the 507 complete. An all-aluminium 3.2-litre V8 engine was placed in a shortened chassis of the 502. This ingenious masterpiece produced no less than 150hp and sounds like a guitar solo in your ears. To save weigt, the body was made of aluminium, which results in a 1280kg’s for a fully finished 507. Besides the phenomenal results, BMW wanted to offer luxury as well. Both aspects are just spot on.

Albrecht Graf von Groetz’ hand drew a timeless linecomposition that defined the BMW 507's bodywork and was desired by a lot of celeberties, such as: : Elvis Presley; The king of Rock N’ Roll, Formula one champion John Surtees, racepilot Hans Stuck, etc...

This offered example was first deliverd in 1959 to an venezuelan owner and was finished in the very rare colorcombination of a Silberbeige bodywork with Cognac brown leather interior. Only 5 examples were being finished in this exact colorbination and only one remains known today. The first owner chose every single option that was aviable fort he 507: Rudge central wing racing wheels, alloy hardtop (only one of eleven factory made!), Girling disc brakes and Becker Mexico radio.

Quickly this 507 found its way back to Europe, where it was sols at the Impérial garage at Paris. This 507 belonged to multiple owners, all known from to first tot he last. One of them was Hans-Dieter Blatzheim, succesful racing driver for Porsche and BMW.

“Astonishing” is the word we are looking to describe this BMW 507. A word we use a lot if it comes to selling classic cars, but only a little few deserve this ‘title’ like this 507 does. When an exceptional model, with an unique story, from what the historical documents are well archieved, it just makes us going crazy. Add matching numbers and -colors tot his list and we are losing it totally. That’s no different with this 507.

This example is being restored by BMW V-8 specialist Brummer, who is official recognized by BMW Classics. This 507 was in vain painted red. In 2008 the owner had it restored again, again by Brummer. They brought it back to its original and unique configuration. As well this example was certificated by BMW Classics and received a “gesamtzustandsnote” – score of 1.55, which is pretty near by perfection! This 507 can, as it were, steal the show in Pebble Beach at the concours d’elefance. Everytime you step behind the steering wheel, you can’t avoid the goosebumps it gives you. The perfectly restored bodywork encloses the classy luxe-interior that sits just behind the roaring and perfect running V8. Each ride feels like you just won the ‘best of show’ title at the most prestigious concours d’elegance all around the world. We are therefor very proud that this BMW 507, Elvis Presley approved, increases our Rock N’ Roll status to over the maximum.
