Description

We have acquired a unique 1974 Fiat-Abarth Formula Italia! This single-seater pocket racer was the result of the Commissione Sportiva Automobilistica Italiana’ (the CSAI) request to Fiat to design, develop and produce a new car in the new single-seater class. This class was intended to promote young aspiring Italian drivers to start their training on way to proper racing drivers. Fiat in turn entrusted this new ‘Formule Italia’ project to the Abarth racing engineers. The eventual outcome was a stunning pocket-racer with a Fiat-Abarth 4-cylinder DOHC engine. Its 1608cc with a compression ratio of 9.8:1 produced allegedly 110-120 Hp at 6,700. The 5-speed gearbox is a transaxle Lancia Fulvia, mounted between the rear wheels. These were very nippy little cars and their racing drivers engaged in hard-fought battle around the Imola, Monza and Vallelunga. There are some famous Italian racing drivers that honed their skills in this class; the much lamented Ferrari official Michele Alboreto, Bruno Giacomelli and Piercario Ghinzani. Riccardo Patrese was also involved with Formule Italia and supplied the car that his friend Siegfried Stohr used to start his racing career. He was one of the new Formule Italia driver who made the grade in Formula 1. This particular car formed part of Guy Moerenhouts Abarth Works museum. About two years ago the car was restored to its original state, colour and stickers. The cars’ mechanical is in excellent working order. The car comes with a Abarth & C.Torino certificate of authenticity. In short a unique car, ready to participate in historic Grand-Prix events and races!
