The ‘356’ was the first production car of the German sports car brand, Porsche, and was designed by Ferry, Ferdinand Porsche’s son. As Ferdinand was involved in the development of the VW Beetle in the 1930s, a wide range of Volkswagen parts were used in the production of the 356.
The first Porsches were assembled in the Gmünd in Austria and were made of aluminium. The cars originally had windscreens with two flat panes, but from 1952 this was replaced by a single curved pane. By the way, production was moved from 1950 to Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen in Germany.
Four-cylinder Boxer engines were used with a capacity of 1,086, 1,268, 1,290 or 1,488 cc with powers ranging from 40 to 60 hp.
Following the 356, the 356A came onto the market in 1955. This ‘A’ was available as a coupé, convertible and Speedster. The engine was bored out to 1,582 cc and produced 60 to 75 hp.
In 1959, the ‘A’ was succeeded by the 356B. Bumpers and headlights were now positioned higher, and the interior and rear wheel suspension were also given an update.
The last and most sophisticated versions of the 356 came onto the market in 1963 and were given the name 356C. Disc brakes on all wheels were now the standard, and the power from the 1.6 litre Boxer engine now lay between 75 and 95 hp.
Production continued until 1966, when the 356 was succeeded by the iconic 911.
“Collection by Vermant” is proud to be able to offer you this Porsche 356C Karmann Coupé from 1964. This one is equipped with its original 1.6 litre, 4-cylinder engine and 75 hp. This power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a manual 4-speed gearbox which also has ‘matching numbers’.
The car was delivered new on 12 November 1964 in California, USA in the fantastic colour of ‘Champagne yellow’. The beautiful interior was finished in black artificial leather.
As an option, the car was fitted with chrome rims and an extended column.
The ‘356’ moved to the Netherlands in 2016 as a restoration project.
The basis remained a dream, however, and there was no need for any welding. The following work was started during his restoration: the paintwork was completely renewed to the original specification and new rubber seals were fitted. The original chrome parts were reworked, as the original part numbers on the indicators show.
The suspension, brakes, engine and gearbox were also completely checked and all wear parts were replaced.
The result is a very beautiful and stylish classic car that is in perfect mechanical condition. The engine is powerful and pulls smoothly through all the gears without any noises. Thanks to the original disc brakes, the car can also be easily brought to a standstill.
Because of the good basis, the bodywork fittings are still attractive and the interior has already been renewed in the past.
Finally, the car still has its original wheel rims!
