Description

Some stories run just a little differently than intended beforehand. The story about this car is typically one such ééone. The first owner, a Frenchman, ordered a 9SPP rolling chassis from Singer. He took it to the French coachbuilder Lemaitre to have an aerodynamic body added. The owner had big plans: he wanted to prepare the car to compete in the already famous 24 Hours of Le Mans. While Lemaitre was working on the body, the Frenchman was working on the engine. He placed another camshaft and increased the compression. The conversion was well underway and all signs pointed to this being a very competitive Singer. Until the wife of the Frenchman got wind of his plans and the Le Mans dream was brutally shattered. The car was of course finished and the first French owner enjoyed it for quite some time, albeit not on the hallowed grounds of La Sarthe. Not much has been kept about the Singer from 1935 to 1951. After that, however, the entire history is known. The car was bought by a Dutchman. He owned the car from 1951 until his death in 2020. For over 68 years he enjoyed the quirky little British sports car. The documentation for this car can therefore only be described as extraordinary. The condition of the car is also very good. The Singer has been completely restored and technically overhauled in the past. The car has always been treated with care and is therefore still in beautiful condition. The body of the Singer looks neatly cared for. The French design on the British chassis is a very stylish combination and looks beautiful. The sheet metal is beautifully thin and original throughout and the chassis is also in good condition. The paint has traces of use and fits well with the overall look of the car. The car is on the original wheels that have good tires in the correct sizes. It is wonderful to see that the wonderful original look of the car has been so well preserved over the years. The windshield can be folded down for nét that extra bit of speed or aerodynamics. Of course, when you are just touring on Sunday, the window can just be raised and if it starts to rain, the wipers can be turned on as well. The interior is equipped with two seats and is wonderfully spartan. The instruments are easy to read and all original. That this is a échte sports car is immediately clear. The seats offer a lot of support and are comfortable. The carpets are in good condition and also the wood on the dashboard is still neatly cared for. The seats are upholstered in beautiful blue leather that is in good condition.

The technique of the Singer is very well maintained. The car has always been driven with love and is still in very good condition. By today's standards, a 972 cc engine producing around 40 hp may be seen as extremely modest but at the time they were attractive numbers, especially taking into account the low car weight of only 650 kilos. The Singer was not built to drive as fast as possible in a straight line, but to attack corners. To get the most out of the car, the trick is to brake as little as possible and to carry as much momentum as possible. It is a true sport and you are helped by the good seating position and predictable handling. The technique has been perfectly maintained over the years and already once fully restored. Looking at the documentation we see many invoices and correspondence regarding new parts that the car needed. The engine is mated to a three-speed manual transmission that shifts precisely. The brakes and chassis are simple but in good condition. It is now really a question of who will continue the fantastic journey of this too crazy Singer. The car comes with a large folder containing several books and technical information about Singer. In addition, there are many invoices and correspondence present and schematics’s to keep the car in top condition. In short, not only a very rare Singer 9HP Special thanks to the Lemaitre body but also a wonderful car that is both optically and technically in excellent condition. This car may rightfully be considered unique. Finally, it is good to mention that this car can be registered for events such as Le Mans Classic.
