Description

Although the word 'pagoda' is reminiscent of faraway exotic places, the W113 series from Mercedes got its legendary nickname after designer Paul Bracq designed the so characteristic hardtop for this model in a boring German industrial building. With the aim of good visibility and sufficient headroom for driver and passenger. The roof, like a pagoda roof, buckled in the middle as a result of the increased headroom and therefore served as its namesake. Striking, after all, it was a car type that was emphatically marketed as a roadster. In fact, the W113 series had to replace the 190SL. The 190SL was an 'affordable' successor to the legendary 300SL, for example, it served as the inspiration for a recurring style element in the form of the uniform headlights. In any case, in terms of driving characteristics, the 113 series was a big leap forward for Mercedes. At the time, motoring journalists described the road holding as if the car was driving on rails. Also for the first time serious attention was paid to the aspect of safety, the new SL was the world's first sports car in '64 with a rigid passenger compartment, while the trunk and engine compartment served as a crumple zone. To reduce the weight of the car, door panels, hood and boot lid were made of aluminum. Although the type designation stands for Sport and Leicht, despite the use of lighter materials, the SL became more of a touring car than a real sports car. The 280SL is the last version of the famous W113 series and therefore also the most developed. In combination with the comfortable automatic gearbox, the enthusiast of comfort has the ultimate version. For those who are looking for such a car, who would like to enjoy driving and who do not have to win a competition, this is the car. The body of this SL is rock solid and sleek. The car has no noteworthy damage or signs of use. The paint quality is excellent and has a nice deep shine. The chrome work is perfect all around. The bottom is also hard and rust-free. In the interior everything is flawless and, for example, the leather on the seats seems to be new. The car drives excellently, has perfect oil pressure and is technically up-to-date. The restoration of this SL was carried out in 2010, the current quality of the body indicates that professional work has been carried out. The convertible top was also renewed, it is still in new condition. The car comes with a black-painted hardtop, which makes the car one of the few classic convertibles to a beautiful appearance, even with a hardtop. Hence the name, the Pagoda.
