Description

When Ferrari introduced the 250 GTE in the early 1960s, something remarkable happened within the Maranello-based brand’s model lineup. For the first time, a Ferrari appeared that not only combined speed and engineering with elegant design, but also offered room for four passengers. The 250 GTE 2+2 was unveiled in 1960 and represented a significant expansion of the renowned 250 series, which played a central role in Ferrari’s history during the 1950s and 1960s.The foundation was the well-known platform of the 250 models, combined with a longer wheelbase. By positioning the engine slightly further forward in the chassis, space was created for two additional seats in the rear. The body was designed and built by Pininfarina, which was responsible for a large portion of Ferrari’s most recognizable designs during this period.Under the long hood lies the famous 3.0-liter Colombo V12, designed by Gioacchino Colombo. This lightweight twelve-cylinder engine formed the technical basis for many Ferrari models of this era. In the 250 GTE, the engine delivers approximately 240 hp and is known for its smooth character and distinctive sound. The model name “250” refers to the displacement per cylinder, a tradition that Ferrari frequently employed at the time. The Ferrari we are offering here is a 1962 250 GTE Series I, a model from the first production series. A total of 299 examples of this first generation were produced before later series followed. This specific example is matching numbers. This Ferrari is presented in a stylish Grigio Fumo color scheme, combined with a black leather interior and beautiful red carpets. This combination perfectly suits the character of a classic Ferrari gran turismo from the early 1960s.Mechanically, a great deal of attention has recently been paid to the car. Roelofs Engineering carried out an extensive restoration project, investing approximately €200,000 in the mechanics. This included work on the engine, drivetrain, and various mechanical components. The result is a 250 GTE that is in excellent technical condition. This is clearly evident in this example. When you take your place behind the wheel, you experience exactly what made this Ferrari so appealing back in the day. The long hood, the character of the V12, and the comfortable gran-turismo nature provide a driving experience that clearly differs from many sports cars of the same era. It is a Ferrari that feels equally at home on long European drives as it does during leisurely road trips. The 250 series played an important role in Ferrari’s history. Models from this series were a key part of the lineup in the 1950s and 1960s and laid the foundation for later Ferrari generations such as the 275 and 330.Today, this Ferrari 250 GTE Series I is a particularly interesting model for enthusiasts of classic Ferraris. The combination of the Pininfarina design, the Colombo V12, and the recent high-quality mechanical upgrades makes this a very attractive example. You are warmly invited to come view this Ferrari at Gallery Aaldering in Brummen.
