In 1976, Ferrari introduced a car with an automatic gearbox for the first time. Although equipped with a Borg Warner gearbox from America, the car was never officially sold there. Ferrari thought it could attract the American buyer, but emission requirements that were not met despite the use of a Bosch KJetronic injection system undermined the Italian plans. Pininfarina's groundbreaking design, as one of the first car designs without the classic grill between the headlights, quickly reached Ferrari fans through the car press and was imported in parallel to a very limited extent. Ferrari's plan in combination with Pininfarina's elegant design was a success in America. Due to 'illegal' imports and the small European market at the time, few copies of the 400i were built. Only 884 copies make the 400i one of the rarer classic V12s. And thanks to the automatic transmission, it is suitable as a gentlemen driver who can just as easily drive you to Albert Heijn as quickly and relaxed to Paris. This beautiful example was exported from Italy to California in the late 1990s and, in order to meet environmental requirements, it was fitted with catalytic converters and the associated electronic ignition. A solution for use in German areas, for example, where a catalyst is required. The car was rust-free and original at the time. Of course, this will not change in dry California, so the car is still in beautiful condition. In the forecastle lies a direct descendant of the V12 designed by engineer Colombo that also powered the famous Daytona. Yet a 'fact' that will make an impression when your friends admire your latest purchase.
It will not be easy to find a better example than this original and unworn 400i. A serious top car in every detail. As people call it so popular these days, matching numbers and colors.
