To get the 131 Abarth homologated for Group 4 competition and to replace the old 124 Abarth, Fiat produced a road version, sold in limited numbers that added up to a few hundred. Unveiled at the 1976 Geneva Motor Show, the 131 Abarth Rally mounted the same engine as the competition version, but a bit "civilized," with the four-cylinder 2.0-liter 16-valve engine developing 140 hp, making it a really fast car since it weighed less than a ton! Other changes from the regular sedan included redesigned plastic body parts, modified suspension, special wheels and a sporty interior. With its more powerful and lighter competition version and a maximum power output of over 200 hp, the Fiat 131 Abarth won the World Rally Championship three times: in 1977, 1978 and 1980.
