Description

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at Race Retro 2026 - Competition Cars on Saturday the 21st of February, Stoneleigh Park, Stoneleigh Rd, Coventry, CV8 2LG. The Escort RS Cosworth needs little introduction. Launched in 1992 as a homologation special, it existed for one reason only: to win rallies. With its turbocharged Cosworth power, permanent four-wheel drive and instantly recognisable silhouette, it quickly cemented itself as one of Ford’s most important performance cars of the era and a cornerstone of modern rally history. Whether on road, stage or circuit, the RS Cosworth has always been a platform that rewards development, modification and competition use.
Offered here is a very different proposition to a concours, road-going example. This Escort comes from long-term 20-year ownership, forming part of a wider collection of road cars and rally machinery. Built up over time by a Fast Ford enthusiast as a track day, hill-climb and competition ‘toy’, and has been used sparingly in our vendor’s ownership. The car features the standard four-wheel drive Cosworth drivetrain, YBT engine and Type 9 gearbox, adjustable suspension, and competition essentials including external fire extinguisher pulls and an electrical cut-off. Finished in Valvoline-inspired livery, it wears its motorsport intent openly and unapologetically.
Importantly, this car does not have a chassis plate, but it is stamped with its genuine chassis number, WF0BXXGKABN089726, on the body shell, near the seat mounting point. The VIN follows the correct Ford Europe structure and indicates a mid-range production number from the early 1993 build window, making it a genuine RS Cosworth shell and a solid foundation for any project.
This Escort is not road registered, is not road legal, and comes with little to no paperwork. It is offered strictly as a competition or project car in need of recommissioning before returning to full use. The car has been stored indoors, so its structural condition is good, however, the overall condition is best described as average, reflecting years spent as a functional performance machine rather than a cosmetic showpiece.
For the right buyer, this represents a unique and cost-effective entry into RS Cosworth ownership. Whether envisaged as the basis for a rally build, a race or hill-climb car, or a long-term development project, it offers the hard-to-find fundamentals of a genuine Cosworth shell without the premium associated with a pristine road car.
Given the nature of the car, its lack of registration and paperwork, and its current condition, inspection is strongly encouraged. Prospective buyers should satisfy themselves as to the build quality and suitability for their intended use. This Escort RS Cosworth is offered exactly as it stands, with significant potential for the next custodian.
