Description

Surely this is something really special, and we say that from several angles. First of all, we are dealing with a beautifully styled pre-war convertible that certainly belongs to one of the most impressive cars from the 1930s. In addition, this is a rare Horch that has a very interesting history. Also, this particular specimen has an incredible history, which is fully known and beautifully documented with various books that alone is a feast for the eyes. We have with this particular Horch the opportunity to briefly correct some historical facts. First of all, it is an incredibly old brand, founded in 1899. That surpasses even Lancia, for example, which was founded in 1906. August Horch, the founder of the German brand Horch, is among the most innovative people of early German automotive history. He was also among the founders of the passenger car with his ideasën and helped shape the automobile as we know it. In the 1930s, not Mercedes but Horch belonged to the top of the luxury segment. And then, of course, there is the Audi brand as we know it today. The automobile brands Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer merged together to form Auto Union A.G. and thus the distinctive four rings of the logo came into being and we don't need to explain to you which brand wears that logo today. Now we make another jump to Gottlieb Daimler, the German engineer who played an important role in the development of the automobile. His son, Paul Daimler, was hired as an engineer at Horch and was put in charge of the Horch 300, a beautiful car equipped with a 3.2 liter engine eight-cylinder inline engine. This engine would be used for many years. Fritz Fiedler, who would later play an important role at BMW, took over Paul Daimler's role and developed not only an eight-cylinder engine, but also a V12 and eventually a fantastic V8 engine. In the period 1926 to 1935, Horch produced four different types of cars’s in the luxury segment equipped with eight-cylinder engines. The Horch 780 we have in our collection was introduced in 1932 under the watchful eye of Fritz Fiedler. With a 4.9 liter engine, the Horch had 100 horsepower at its disposal and could reach a top speed of 125 kilometers per hour in comfort. Looking at historical data, Horch produced only 250 to 300 examples and about sixteen are still known today. The Horch 780 Sport Cabriolet, which we present here, was designed by Hermann Ahrens, who also designed the legendary Mercedes-Benz 540 K Roadster. This example has an incredibly rich history. Originally, this Horch was delivered to a textile dealer, P.H. Hendriks in Groningen, the Netherlands. The latter owned the car for seven years until January 1940, as the Horch was then confiscated by the Germans during World War II. When the war was over, the army withdrew, but at that point the Groningen officials came into the picture. They said “let the Germans walk home and bring us the car back”. Because this Horch was owned by the Kingdom of the Netherlands, it was assigned to Adriaan van der Wyck, a general who used the Horch only for business occasions. At a later stage, Mr. Van der Wyck bought the car and owned it for no less than 47 years from 1948 to 1995. The last owner owned the car until recently and bought the Horch from Mr. Van der Wyck's widow. The car was then restored and reconditioned in a very high-quality manner. This was really done on a detail level, putting this Horch in the concours quality category. The Horch therefore looks stunning and nothing has been spared to get this special Horch in the condition it is in today. After the restoration and overhaul work, the Horch competed at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2022 and won first prize in its class! Probably this achievement shows what kind of condition this Horch is in. With this example, we provide two exceptional books full of documentation, which describe the history of this Horch in excellent and extremely detailed detail. The books are very impressive and full of historical facts, photos’s of this Horch, including its previous owners. In addition, the restoration and overhaul activities are accurately charted. After the restoration, the Horch was professionally photographed; a stunning photo report was created. Are you interested in this breathtakingly beautiful Horch?
