In 1972, Maserati introduced the Merak as the Bora’s more compact sibling. The two cars looked very similar and shared various body and construction parts, but under the hood, they were truly different machines. While the Bora had a large V8 engine located behind the passengers, the Merak was equipped with a more compact V6.
This design immediately offered an advantage: space behind the front seats for two small seats. This makes it a mid-engine Maserati with a 2+2 interior. While it may not comfortably seat four adults, it can easily fit a coat, a bag, or two children, making it more practical than many of its contemporaries.
The 3.0 V6 engine was related to the one used in the Citroën SM, reflecting Citroën’s ownership of Maserati at the time. The first Meraks adopted various technical solutions from Citroën.
In 1975, Maserati introduced the Merak SS. The "SS" designation signified a power increase, weight reduction, and interior redesign. The engine produced 220 horsepower. Coupled with a five-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, and the mid-engine layout, the Merak SS offered an engaging driving experience typical of Italian sports cars from that era.
Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Merak’s styling is related to the Bora but has a distinctive look of its own. The open space between the cabin and rear, framed by "flying buttresses," gives it a unique profile. Unlike the Bora, it lacks a large rear window, offering better visibility and an airy feel. The sleek lines and understated silver body color highlight Giugiaro’s design, which remains stylish and visually striking.
This example was delivered new in Switzerland in 1981 and remains largely in its original condition. The silver paint complements the sharp design, and the interplay of lines is especially noticeable when light hits the body.
The interior is particularly noteworthy. This Merak SS features a "Special Order" leather interior, exceptionally well-preserved and meticulously maintained. The quality of materials, colors, and finishes, including folded edges and seams, reflect its originality and careful preservation.
The odometer reads just 13,000 kilometers, which is believed to be the original mileage, though we present this as a reported figure.
