Description

When Mercedes-Benz introduced the R129 SL in 1989, it represented a new generation of the legendary SL. More sophisticated, more powerful and considerably more advanced than its predecessor, it combined traditional Mercedes-Benz qualities of comfort and durability with technology that was genuinely impressive for its time. The result was a roadster capable of crossing Europe at high speed just as effortlessly as cruising along the Côte d’Azur with the roof down.

The SL 320 occupies a particularly appealing position within the R129 range. Its 3.2-litre M104 straight-six delivers smooth, progressive performance, while the automatic transmission makes the car effortless to drive. Select Sport mode, however, and considerably more enthusiasm becomes available when the road starts to get interesting.

The R129 was also built during an era when Mercedes-Benz was not afraid of engineering a car more thoroughly than strictly necessary. Even Princess Diana chose an R129 during the same era, driving a 500 SL with the larger V8 engine.

This 1993 Mercedes-Benz SL 320 was originally delivered in Belgium and is finished in the particularly attractive Bornite Metallic, paired with a black leather interior. The colour gives the car the understated elegance typical of the early R129, while allowing it to stand apart from the more common silver, black and blue examples.

What makes this particular SL especially appealing is its extensive specification. It comes equipped with electrically adjustable seats with memory function, heated seats, air conditioning, cruise control and the original Mercedes-Benz radio. The beautifully preserved wood trim adds a touch of classic Mercedes-Benz luxury, while the original Mercedes-Benz wheels complete the exterior.

The original hardtop is also included, giving the car the versatility to be enjoyed throughout the year. The soft top remains in good condition and is ready for open-air driving.

The paintwork is not original but presents well, while the exterior trim, chrome and plastics remain in good condition. Inside, the black leather shows the normal signs of age and use but remains very well presented.

The 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine runs smoothly and the automatic transmission shifts as it should. With just 113,460 kilometres, European specification, a desirable Bornite Metallic colour combination, extensive equipment and its original hardtop, this SL 320 offers exactly what makes the R129 so appealing today.

A proper Mercedes-Benz roadster from an era when over-engineering was still part of the plan. And judging by the options list, they certainly weren't afraid of adding a few extras either.
