its world premiere at the Deichtorhallen.**\\\\\*25 years later, one can say:**\\\*THE DESIGN HAS AGED AMAZINGLY WELL.**\\\\\*Long.**\\\*Low-slung.**\\\*Wide.**\\\*A hood that seems to go on forever.**\\\*The rear is short and muscular.**\\\*And that distinctive silhouette—no one has to look twice to know:**\\\*THIS IS AN SL.**\\\\\*OURS IS AN SL 350.**\\\*And that means:**\\\*3.5 LITERS.**\\\*6 CYLINDERS.**\\\*272 PS.**\\\\\*No turbo.**\\\*No downsizing.**\\\*No hybrid.**\\\\\*But rather a classic:**\\\*V6 NATURALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE.**\\\\\*Plus:**\\\*AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.**\\\*REAR-WHEEL DRIVE.**\\\*AND TWO SEATS.**\\\\\*Actually, a pretty good list of ingredients for a:**\\\*GRAND TOURER.**\\\\\*272 PS.**\\\*Today, in an era when even family SUVs are available with 400 or 500 PS, that might sound almost modest.**\\\\\*But:**\\\*272 PS DOESN’T HAVE TO APOLOGIZE.**\\\\\*Especially not in an SL.**\\\\\*Because this car was never built to set an acceleration record at every traffic light.**\\\\\*The SL does something else much better:**\\\*TRAVELING.**\\\\\*Roof up.**\\\*Heated seats on.**\\\*Find a long country road.**\\\*And eventually realize:**\\\*ACTUALLY, WE JUST WANTED TO GO OUT FOR DINNER.**\\\\\*COUPE?**\\\*ROADSTER?**\\\*YES.**\\\\\*One of the R230’s greatest technical attractions remains its Variroof to this day.**\\\\\*Closed:**\\\*A REAL COUPE.**\\\\\*Press a button.**\\\\\*A little hydraulic ballet begins.**\\\\\*And just a few seconds later:**\\\*ROADSTER.**\\\\\*No fabric top.**\\\*No soft top.**\\\*No fiddling around.**\\\\\*RATHER:**\\\*PRESS THE BUTTON.**\\\*ROOF UP.**\\\\\*It was precisely this combination that made the R230 so fascinating back then.**\\\\\*Closed in the morning on registration:**\\\*05/2006.**\\\\\*Mileage:**\\\*165,000 KM.**\\\\\*SECOND-HAND.**\\\\\*Mathematically, that works out to just about:**\\\*8,000 KM PER YEAR.**\\\\\*Of course, a calculated annual average says nothing about when those kilometers were actually driven.**\\\\\*But it helps put things into perspective.**\\\\\*After all, 165,000 km on a 20-year-old touring car is quite different from 165,000 km on a five-year-old everyday car.**\\\\\*AN SL IS BUILT TO BE DRIVEN.**\\\\\*And that’s exactly what this one was obviously allowed to do.**\\\\\*NOT A COLLECTOR’S ITEM WITH 8,000
