Description

History and Background

The 1968 Mercedes-Benz 200D belongs to the so-called W110 series, often known in the Netherlands as the “kleine Heckflosse” or “Ponylucht.” This generation debuted in the early 1960s as a more compact derivative of the larger Mercedes models and filled the gap in the lineup between the entry-level models and the heavier inline-six variants. The Mercedes-Benz 200D was part of a series of diesel models that gave Mercedes-Benz a clear position within the mid-size segment during this period.

Diesel technology was not yet commonplace in passenger cars during those years, but Mercedes-Benz had already gained early experience with durable compression-ignition engines through the 180D and its successor models. The Mercedes-Benz 200D built on that legacy and was particularly valued for the distinctive character of its diesel engine in a market still heavily dominated by gasoline engines. Within the W110 series, the 200D was one of the models that helped Mercedes-Benz make diesel driving more widely accepted, both among private and business customers.

In 1968, the W110 was in the final phase of its production, shortly before the succeeding generations took over the segment. The body style, with its fin-like rear fenders, had by then become a recognizable feature of Mercedes-Benz cars of that era, while the underlying technology remained conservative and focused on practicality. As a result, the Mercedes-Benz 200D is a model that is primarily associated with the transitional period between the classic postwar Mercedes designs and the more streamlined models of the 1970s.

Features and Distinguishing Characteristics

The Mercedes-Benz 200D is known as a model with simple, robust engineering and a design focused on efficient use. The diesel engine was a key distinguishing feature in this class and suited the car’s character as a prestigious yet practical sedan. For many models at the time, practicality and reliability took precedence over luxury or performance. The 1968 Mercedes-Benz 200D fits into this trend and represents a phase in which Mercedes-Benz further solidified its reputation in the field of diesel passenger cars.

This particular car is in running condition. It was originally delivered new in the Netherlands. Extensive documentation is available. Both the interior and exterior are generally in good condition. The Mercedes-Benz 200D is exempt from road tax and the mandatory vehicle inspection (APK). This combination of provenance, documentation, and presentation makes the vehicle a representative example of the Dutch-market version of this model from its final production period.

Summary

The 1968 Mercedes-Benz 200D is a late model from the W110 generation, equipped with a diesel engine and originally delivered in the Netherlands. With extensive documentation, roadworthy condition, and a generally neat presentation of both the interior and exterior, this is a characteristic representative of Mercedes-Benz’s early diesel history.
