Description

The Mercedes-Benz 220S was part of the W180 series, known in the 1950s as the Ponton generation. These models marked an important transition to a modern monocoque body with integrated fenders and a more streamlined design compared to the postwar models that preceded them. The 220S was the more luxurious version within the six-cylinder lineup, positioned between the mid-range models and larger prestige cars.

During this period, the 220S combined comfort, reliability, and technical refinement. Its inline-six engine was characteristic of higher-end Mercedes models of the era, appealing to buyers who prioritized smoothness and build quality over raw performance. The 220S was available as a sedan, and depending on the variant and market, also as a coupe and convertible. It became a recognizable representative of the postwar Mercedes lineup from the late 1950s.

This 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S is a late example of the W180 series, emphasizing build quality and comfortable driving. The combination of traditional Mercedes engineering with a modern body design marked a significant step forward for the brand. A well-documented Mercedes-Benz 220S is considered a car of historical significance within early postwar Mercedes production.

This vehicle was restored in 1995 by Jaap Havik. It was used in several rallies, including the SLS in 1996. The restoration and usage history are documented in the accompanying reference manual. Since restoration, the car has been driven approximately 32,000 kilometers.

The interior features a wooden dashboard and other wooden trim, all in impeccable condition. The car retains original details and is equipped with a period-correct Becker Mexico radio. It has the inline six-cylinder engine and a four-speed manual transmission, consistent with the specifications of the W180 series. Enthusiasts and collectors value this model for its technical simplicity and authentic period finish.

This 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S is a well-documented example, featuring a restoration, rally use, and period-correct interior details. Interested buyers are encouraged to attend the viewing day for a better impression.
