The two abbreviations W114 and W115 basically identify versions with 6- and 4/5-cylinder engines, respectively. Heir to the W110 Heckflosse, the W114/W115 was unveiled in 1968 at the Geneva Motor Show, but marketing began as early as January. The goal of the new model was to improve in comfort, safety and build quality on the previous model.
The design of the new model was also to aim for chassis efficiency and at the same time optimize interior space. A completely new chassis was therefore designed, created specifically for the new model. From this point of view, it should be noted the final abandonment of the rear axle with oscillating semi-axles in favor of the new rear axle with oscillating triangles mounted obliquely on an auxiliary frame, a solution that revealed excellent behavior.
