Mercedes-Benz 230 S W110 “Heckflosse” 1967

This is an original Dutch car preserved in its original condition. It features the most powerful 6-cylinder engine (M180) with 120 hp and a manual 4-speed floor-mounted transmission. The interior is upholstered in "MB" Tex gray leatherette. An original registration certificate is available. The car has an appraised value of €30,000 in 2024.

History and Documentation

The Mercedes-Benz W110 “Heckflosse” derives its nickname from the fins on the rear, which were considered eccentric at the time and reminiscent of American cars. These fins served a functional purpose as corner markers to aid reverse parking. This 1967 model was originally delivered in the Netherlands on October 20, 1967. Compared to the 4-cylinder models, only about 40,000 units of the second-generation W110 230 were built, making it relatively rare compared to approximately 230,000 4-cylinder units.

The original registration certificate remains with the car. Maintenance invoices from the official Mercedes-Benz dealer, photos, MOT forms, and a valuation report from 2024 are included. The vehicle is exempt from motor vehicle tax and MOT in the Netherlands. The condition appears consistent with the mileage.

Exterior

The bodywork is unrestored but remains sleek and pristine. The black paint, with color code 040 G (Glanz), is elegant and in very good condition with a glossy finish. The rims are fitted with black hubcaps with chrome trim rings, and the tires feature subtle white sidewalls. Chrome trim and rubber components are also in good condition.

Interior

The interior features light gray Mercedes-Benz Tex upholstery on the seats and headliner, both in good condition. The cabin exudes a sense of class and grandeur. A notable feature is the manual floor-mounted transmission. The large steering wheel adds to the driving experience. The black dashboard includes a clock and heating controls. The interior is in good, original condition. The rear seat is undamaged and includes a fold-out center armrest. A fire extinguisher is located under the front seat. The original toolkit and jack are included. The trunk is tidy and has space for the spare tire.

Technical

This W110 is equipped with the rare and powerful 2.3-liter M180.949 6-cylinder engine, delivering 120 hp (88 kW; 118 hp) at 5400 rpm and 18.2 kg·m (178 N·m; 132 lb·ft) at 4000 rpm. The engine runs smoothly without unusual noises, and the transmission shifts seamlessly. The Maxxis tires have sufficient tread. The car has been well maintained and comes with a comprehensive maintenance history.

General

The Mercedes W110 was a 4-door sedan produced between 1961 and 1968. Known as the “Heckflosse,” it was the predecessor to the later E-Class. The name, meaning “tail fin” in German, refers to its distinctive body shape. Although tail fins had peaked in popularity earlier, this design was still chosen for its daring look, especially compared to its predecessor, the Ponton. The model debuted at the 1961 Frankfurt Motor Show. In 1965, it received a facelift with changes including removal of chrome on the fenders, repositioned turn signals below the headlights, enlarged taillights, and updated engine options, including the introduction of the 230 model sourced from the S-Class.
