Description

If one is honest, Mercedes' 1950s model offering, is from an era that represents the cornerstone of their legend status for making some of the finest, most capable, and most elegant sports cars conceived.

Historically, Mercedes realized it needed to address the growing trend towards convertibles as demand was increasing, chiefly motivated by the clamor for roadsters specifically in the USA. In answer, in 1955, the 190 SL joined the line-up alongside both coupé and roadster iterations reflective of and clearly inspired by the 300 SL.

The entry-level 190 SL was powered by a 1.9-litre inline-four that was delivered from the 3.0-litre straight-six found in the 300 SL. Additionally, the 190 SL was marketed by Mercedes-Benz as a more affordable alternative to the Gullwing and later, the 300 SL Roadster.

Many of the shared styling cues are obvious, while beneath them, both models made use of a similar independent suspension system.

Cost as a consideration for this itineration, Mercedes did away with the tubular "spaceframe" of the W198 platform and adapted the older W121 chassis for mass production. The 190 SL was positioned as a fun, sexy touring car, intended to rival the Porsche's 356. It comfortably accommodates two people along with luggage for a 2 or 3-night getaway, despite the upper part of the car being designed around its folding roof mechanism.

This car in offering, comes with many possibilities. Each is of merit. As is, favored by a later complete restoration and having undergone an extensive current service. It represents the opportunity to turn the key and drive.

It has the inherent forms and functions to be restored as new once again. In a color, texture, or fabric of personal choice.

Comes, with books, tools, extensive records, and benefits from long-term ownership.
