Description

A 1956 Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet in dark blue with beige leather upholstery. That sounds great even before you’ve seen the car at all. But once you do see it, it actually gets even better. The Ponton lines, the chrome, the long doors, and that beautiful open body all come together to form exactly the kind of classic convertible that Mercedes-Benz excelled at in the 1950s. Stately, but not stiff. Luxurious, but not ostentatious. And above all, a real pleasure to look at. The 220 S was introduced in 1956 as part of the new generation of Mercedes-Benz models featuring a self-supporting Ponton body. Under the hood was a 2.2-liter six-cylinder engine with an overhead camshaft, producing about 100 pk. This made the 220 S not only comfortable and reliable at the time, but also nimble enough for serious travel. Especially in its Cabriolet form, this was no ordinary Mercedes, but an exceptionally luxurious open-top four-seater for customers who clearly wanted something more elegant than the standard sedan. And who can blame them? The Cabriolet had a shorter wheelbase than the sedan and was built with great care in Sindelfingen. That’s precisely why the proportions are so spot-on. The car looks compact enough to remain elegant, yet spacious and generous enough to be instantly recognizable as a true Mercedes. Is this perhaps the most beautiful model from the Ponton era? We completely understand the question. This particular example was fully restored and rebuilt in Germany in 2019. And in our experience, a German restoration usually means one thing above all else: quality. Not a quick cosmetic touch-up, but a thorough approach where the details matter. The paint is exceptionally beautiful, the beige leather is in superb condition, and the meticulous finish gives the car exactly the right feel. Be sure to check out the extensive photo gallery on our website. The whole car feels fresh, well-maintained, and impressively well-built. Technically, too, this 220 S makes a very convincing impression. The engine runs quietly and smoothly, exactly as you’d hope from a Mercedes in this class. Dark blue with beige. Or, to put it even more elegantly: Dunkelblau mit Teigbeige. It’s the kind of color combination that never really goes out of style. Classic, stylish, and just the right amount of chic. Moreover, the previous owner had a custom luggage set made for all of his cars. A fully restored 1956 Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet, finished in an iconic color scheme, beautifully crafted, and driving just as a great classic Mercedes should. Drive with the top down, six cylinders at your disposal, chrome all around, and custom luggage in the trunk. Contact Gallery Aaldering today and discover this Mercedes-Benz for yourself.
