Description

Order a color anyway! That's what the first owner of this brilliantly put together R107-generation Mercedes-Benz 450SL must have thought. What a delightful combination of colors. The composition consists of a “Thristle Green” exterior and one with green carpets, a light green dashboard and green leather upholstery. It is truly a stunning combination. The color is enhanced by the black convertible top. This is a 1973 car that still has the beautiful classic bumpers, the following year the bumpers were made no less than 8 inches longer to meet the more stringent crash safety requirements. That this Mercerdes-Benz was delivered new in the United States is hardly surprising. As much as two-thirds of its entire production was sold in the US. At the time of the R107, the SL was even described with the most delightful American description ever. It was a “personal luxury car”, no idea what such exactly means but there is a hint of success around it. The car is in fine condition. The bodywork has already been repainted once in its original color and still looks very good. The sheet metal is nice and thin throughout and has correct fits. The car stands on the characteristic crown cork wheels that not only match the look of the car very well but are also in good condition and have good tires in the correct sizes. The convertible top operates smoothly and fits beautifully throughout. The paint has some light signs of use appropriate to the age and mileage. The interior looks beautiful. The interior is all original so it is not surprising to see some light signs of use here and there. The inside of the SL is equipped with a counter that displays both kilometers and miles. The interior, as usual with cars from “Das Haus” of this period, is built to last. The knobs and sliders in the interior all still work as well as the day the car was delivered new. The dashboard is otherwise business-like in design and is a model of German efficiency. The leather is wonderfully supple and the carpets look fine as well. The mounted Becker Mexico radio is the icing on the cake. It is a pleasure to get out and about with a car like this. Right from its introduction, the R107 was praised for its good handling. This is hardly surprising because looking at the underlying engineering, it is only natural that this must be a fine driving car. The car is equipped with a 4.5-liter low compression V8 engine equipped with fuel injection. The engine produces 190 horsepower and is mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. The speed limit in the United States is around 60 miles almost everywhere so this is eminently a car to enjoy touring with. Handling is comfortable thanks to the good suspension and the brakes are also up to the task and fine to dose. In short, a beautifully composed Mercedes-Benz 450SL from the R107 generation in a color combination that you will not easily find again.
