The name "Grand Marquis" was introduced in 1975 as the top-of-the-range version of the Mercury Marquis. In 1983, the Grand Marquis became a model in its own right. The car was essentially the Mercury twin of the Ford Crown Victoria. After the Crown Victoria was discontinued, the Grand Marquis became the base model of Ford cars built on the Panther platform. The Grand Marquis had a separate chassis and a front-mounted engine. With the discontinuation of the Mercury brand, production ended in October 2010.
