Vehicle history:
This car was purchased in December 1934 as a chassis directly from the factory by a Mr. L. Levy, who had a special light-metal body built for it. The engine was heavily tuned and featured a compression ratio of 9:1, a very light flywheel, and machined and polished intake and exhaust ports. The total cost of the finished car amounted to nearly 500 pounds. Throughout 1935, Levy raced the car at both Brooklands and Donington Park, though without much success, as he was competing against ERA cars and other more powerful vehicles. At the end of the season, the car was offered for sale by J.H. Bartlett Ltd in the magazine “The Motor” for £245. It was purchased by A.F. Thatcher. Freddie Thatcher, a friend of Levy’s, raced the car until late 1938, mainly at Brooklands. During this time, the car was maintained by Brian Finglass, who had a workshop at Brooklands, and at the end of the 1936 season, Finglass reshaped the intake ports, installed different carburetor needles, and fitted a higher rear-axle ratio. The top speed increased by about 10% to 110 mph. Although Finglass never raced the car himself, he completed numerous test laps at Brooklands. While Thatcher owned the car, it was also raced by the Haesendonk brothers. Toward the end of 1938, when he withdrew from racing for business reasons, Thatcher put the car up for sale for 250 pounds. The next known race in which the car competed took place in March 1939 at Brooklands, where it was driven by A.S. Whiddington. It did not finish in the top positions. Nothing is known about the car’s whereabouts during the war until Michael Holt purchased it in 1955 from a workshop in Hove, equipped with a rebuilt engine. Jim Bellamy of Great Bookham, Surrey, bought the car around 1957 and dismantled it. He sold it in disassembled condition in 1958 to J.A. Haynes, who completely rebuilt it. There are records showing that Haynes raced it in VSCC events in 1966. In 1969, the car was purchased by Peter Scott, who used it only rarely. The car was acquired by Peter Altenbach in 1976 and was used extensively in racing between 1976 and 1985, including races at the Nürburgring, the Salzburgring, and the “Mille Miglia.” Twenty years ago, Peter sold his car to an MG collector in northern Germany. He, too, enjoyed using it frequently at events. Today, the NA is in good cosmetic condition and technically sound.
