The Pagani Zonda is a mid-engined Gran Turismo car produced in Italy by Pagani Automobili between 1999 and 2010 . About ten different versions were produced for a total of 140 examples. The name comes from a strong hot wind that blows in the Argentine pampas .
The first Zonda projects date back to the early nineties when Horacio Pagani , who had a past at Lamborghini , founded Pagani Composite Research and Modena Design . The initial project was simply called C8, but Pagani had decided to dedicate the car to Juan Manuel Fangio who had presented it to the top management of Mercedes-AMG .
Thanks to Fangio's intercession, Pagani obtained the supply of engines for his cars from Mercedes-AMG and in 1998 the definitive prototype of the C8 project was created which was aesthetically inspired by the Mercedes that ran in the sports prototype category in the early nineties.
In 1999, the C8 was presented at the Geneva Motor Show and received the definitive name of Zonda, a wind that blows in the Argentine pampas. The full name of the car was Zonda C12 and it stood out for the extensive use of composite materials for both the chassis and the bodywork .
The Zonda C12 would have been none other than the first of a long series of variants of the Zonda, including the Zonda F ( 2005 ), the Zonda Cinque ( 2008 ) and the Zonda R ( 2009 ).
