Ah, the Piaggio Ape – or rather, the Apéé, as only the Italians can pronounce it with such delightful flair. This charming three-wheeler was introduced by Piaggio in 1948 as a response to the harsh realities of the post-war years. Corradino D’Ascanio, the brilliant mind behind the Vespa, came up with a genius idea: a three-wheeled micro-truck to help speed up Italy’s reconstruction. Enrico Piaggio, the maestro behind the Vespa, was instantly convinced.
Speed? No, that wasn’t really the priority. The early Apes came with 50cc, 125cc, 150cc engines, and later a “super-fast” 175cc version. Perfect for zipping through narrow alleys, bouncing over cobbled Italian streets, carrying a load of fresh tomatoes in the back – or why not, a few bottles of Chianti.
Picture yourself behind the wheel of an Ape, driving through a sun-drenched Sicilian village. The locals wave, you stop for a chat – an extensive one, of course, because that’s how they do it in Italy – about which wine pairs best with the Pasta alla Norma Nonna just made!
And this Ape? It’s something truly special.
