This is one of those cars that keep coming back, for all the right reasons. This will be the third time we’ve sold this car in the past 8 years…no it's not a lemon, it's a tangerine! It seems to get better every time as each owner adds miles and new memories to the rich history of the car.
We are happy to present this matching numbers 1969 Porsche 911S with factory Golde sunroof finished in Tangerine with black leatherette with pepita inserts. The car was ordered from the factory by James Adair of Kent, Washington. He took delivery of the car on November 25, 1968, with the following factory options per the Kardex/COA; U.S. equipment, electric sunroof, tinted glass all around, Michelin tires, 9842 PEP B P (Pepita seat inserts).
Mr. Adair drove the car for a couple of years before selling it to Merle Arrington of Butte, Montana on December 10, 1970. Mr. Arrington kept the car for years until he sold it to his first cousin Chuck Meyers of Sedona, Arizona in 1979. Mr. Meyers enjoyed the car until 1988 when he sold it back to the Arrington family, the second owner's son, Terry (you still with me?). Terry lived in Shelley, Idaho, and kept the family heirloom for an additional 26 years before selling it in 2014. In total, the car stayed in the same family for 44 years and we have service history/receipts dating back to the late 1970s.
In January of 2014, the car was shipped to Kundensport in Oxnard, California for restoration where we subsequently purchased the car. We brought it down to our shop in Costa Mesa, California, and finished the restoration. It was then sold to Kent Whitman of Dallas, Texas in 2014 and then, due to unforeseen family circumstances, he sold it back to us in 2016. The current owner purchased the car from us on March 22, 2016.
Paint and bodywork were handled at Kundensport before we purchased the car and everything else was done in-house at our facility in Costa Mesa. Since the original interior was in such good shape, we decided to keep it, only replacing the worn front seats (recovered in factory-correct materials), recovered the dash, and installed fresh carpet and insulation. We serviced the sunroof and refurbished the Blaupunkt radio. All the original wiring was gone through, cleaned, and repaired. Instruments were sent to Palo Alto Speedometer for refurbishment. NOS Hella 169 fog lights were sourced and installed. The transmission was rebuilt in-house and the following was replaced; flywheel, clutch disc, clutch cover, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, bushings, etc. All synchro rings including dog teeth, first gear slider including reverse, main and secondary bearings, all gaskets and seals were replaced. A NOS fuel tank was sourced, prepped, painted, and installed. The engine was completely rebuilt by our in-house engine department adding an oil bypass modification and new 930 chain tensioners for reliability. A NOS oil cooler was installed in the front fender. At the time of the restoration, incorrect 911E fuel injection components were on the engine so a correct MFI pump was sourced, rebuilt, and installed to 911S spec. The suspension and brakes were completely rebuilt with new bushings, shocks, bearings, calipers, hoses, lines, etc. All the original anodized and chrome work is original and reinstalled on the car.
The car is completely matching numbers with a factory Golde sunroof. It retains all its original glass beside the front windshield which has been replaced. All five deep-six Fuchs are date stamped with a matching spare. The car comes with a thick binder filled with history/documentation of the car and its owners dating back to the late 1970s. The car also comes with the original elephant hide tool bag (1969 only) with refurbished original tools and jack, as well as an original owner’s manual with jacket. The factory Kardex and COA will also be included with the purchase. This is one of just 1492 S Coupes built in 1969.
