In September 1965 Porsche presented the 911 Targa at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. This car is neither a convertible nor a coupe, neither a hardtop nor a sedan, but something completely new: the world's first safety convertible with a fixed safety arch or rollbar. A removable folding roof and a fold-down plastic rear window allow multi-sensory open-air driving fun never before seen in open cars: fully closed, fully open, or just with the center roof section removed or the rear window folded down.
The Targa concept is the starting signal for a new Porsche driving experience and henceforth accompanies not only all 911 generations, but also other models to follow, such as the 914 or the Carrera GT.
In the search for a model name, one looks to tracks where Porsche has been particularly successful, and the choice immediately falls on the "Targa Florio" - the road race in Sicily where Porsche has been celebrating great results since the mid-1950s.
"911 Flori" remains in limbo for a short time, until Harald Wagner, sales manager for the German market, rather casually ends the search with the question, "Why don't we just say Targa? That the Italian term also means 'car license plate' stands out," so goes the legend. In August 1965, Porsche applied for a patent for the Targa concept, and by the fall of 1966 the Targa joined the already well-known Coupe with the 911, 911 S and 912 and received much acclaim. From late summer 1967, Targa models could also be ordered with a fixed heatable safety glass rear window instead of the folding plastic rear window. A solution that became standard equipment the following year and accompanied the Targa until 1993, remaining essentially unchanged.
