Description

History and Background

The Porsche 928 was introduced in 1977 as a notably different model within the Porsche lineup. Whereas the brand had traditionally relied heavily on the air-cooled, rear-mounted six-cylinder engine, the 928 opted for a front-mounted V8, rear-wheel drive, and a transaxle configuration. This was intended to give the car a grand touring character with a different technical approach than the 911, while retaining the core philosophy of a sporty, high-quality touring car. The Porsche 928 was initially developed as a potential successor to the 911, but eventually evolved into a model series of its own with a distinct position within Porsche’s lineup.

The early version of the Porsche 928, which includes the 1980 model year, belongs to the first generation of the model. During this period, the design—featuring integrated bumpers, pop-up headlights, and a plastic rear hatch—was characteristic of the 928 line. The car was known as a technically advanced combination of comfort, performance, and a relatively luxurious finish for its time. The Porsche 928 was produced in limited numbers compared to more common sports cars of that era and thus secured its own place in the brand’s history early on.

This particular example is a Porsche 928 manufactured on September 24, 1980. The car is Belgian and was purchased from its first owner in Knokke. The purchase invoice is included, as is the partially completed maintenance booklet. The car has a Dutch license plate and a new APK inspection certificate.

Features and Details

The Porsche 928 is finished in Schwarz Metallic with black leather sport seats. In addition, the car is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission with a dogleg shifter, power windows, a power sunroof, a sport steering wheel, a front-loading radio/CD player, and 15-inch original wheels. These features align well with the 928’s positioning as a 1980s GT model, where technology and driving comfort were central.

Under the hood lies a 4.5-liter eight-cylinder gasoline engine with an output of 240 pk, or 180 kW. When it was introduced, the Porsche 928 was one of the first Porsche production models to feature this engine layout and a transaxle design, in which the transmission is mounted in the rear. This contributed to the weight distribution and clearly distinguished the 928 from other Porsche models of the same period. The current mileage is higher than stated; the odometer was replaced at 256,204 km, and since then, the car has reportedly been driven approximately 4,000 km. The car is exempt from road tax.

Summary

This 1980 Porsche 928 combines the model’s early technical design with a manual transmission, a 4.5-liter V8, and various period-specific equipment details. The inclusion of the purchase invoice, the service booklet, the Dutch license plate, and the new APK certificate provides a complete picture of the lot. However, the odometer reading is higher than stated. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend that you attend the viewing day.
