Description

The Porsche 928 was introduced in the late 1970s as a distinct model within the Porsche lineup. Unlike the traditional rear-mounted boxer engine of the 911, the 928 features a front-mounted V8 engine and a transaxle layout. This engineering aimed to achieve a different balance between performance, comfort, and handling. The 928 was not a direct replacement for the 911 but Porsche’s interpretation of a fast grand tourer.

Positioned in the higher segment, the 928 was designed to compete with sporty luxury cars from Germany and Italy. It quickly gained a reputation as a technically advanced Porsche, thanks to aluminum details, a streamlined body, and a modern chassis design for its time. Production ran from 1977 to 1995, with various updates to the powertrain and equipment over the years. The early years are significant for establishing the model’s basic architecture, which later versions built upon.

The 1982 Porsche 928 falls within the early production phase. By then, the model had established itself as a distinct vehicle emphasizing long-distance capability and a different technical approach compared to Porsche’s air-cooled sports cars. The 928 remains a standout in Porsche’s history.

The Porsche 928 features a front-mounted eight-cylinder engine and a rear-mounted transaxle, resulting in a favorable weight distribution. Its body shape is notably streamlined, reflecting its technical ambitions and focus on stability at high speeds and suitability for long-distance driving.

For the 1982 model year, the car has undergone some refinements from the initial launch version. It is in running condition and has been included in the auction lot as a functional vehicle.

This 1982 Porsche 928 represents an important chapter in Porsche’s history as a technically unconventional grand tourer with a front-mounted V8 and transaxle layout. It is an early version from a model series that carved out its own niche within the brand. To get a better idea of the lot, attending the viewing days is recommended.
