Description

The Riley 9 remains a great car and was an important model for the marque at the time. The 1,087 cc four-cylinder engine with two camshafts is a jewel of an engine and was popular among drivers for good reason. For example, JG. Parry-Thomas was a big fan of this engine and together with Reid Railton he developed a racing chassis, in which the Riley engine could be placed. The result of all this was that Riley eventually built a small series under the name Brooklands. What was different from the standard Riley? Compared to the Riley 9, the Brooklands included a shorter wheelbase and featured high compression pistons, ‘sportier’ camshafts and twin carburetors. With only 110 examples between 1928 and 1932, the Brooklands remains a very rare prewar sports car. The motorsport world got wind of this sporty Riley and with its excellent handling, high performance and low center of gravity, this Riley had the perfect combination to finish high in the 1,100 cc class. And the Riley did so with flying colors. Among other things, the Brooklands achieved a double victory in the 1932 Ulster Tourist Trophy, but the model also won the Index of Performance at the 1934 24 Hours of Le Mans. Rileys were already being converted in England in the 1930s and 1940s into so-called ‘Specials’ for racing purposes. Numerous replicas of the Brooklands model have been produced in recent years, and our example is certainly considered ééone of the better and most authentic ones.

Specialist Allen Clear manufactured this specimen between 2004 and 2007 using only original Brooklands or modified Riley 9 parts and carefullyïntegrated it into the design. To make the unregistered Brooklands chassis suitable for street use with registration plates, a chassis number from a 1933 Riley Falcon was used. The body, which features the distinctive blue color, is made of lightweight aluminum. The car comes with authentic Brooklands steering complete with a steering wheel equipped with two adjustable levers for ignition and throttle. The dashboard features the original Rotax switch panel and includes matching Jaeger gauges for RPM, speed, water temperature and oil pressure. For racing purposes, a custom-made divisible black cloth cover can be fitted to one side. The engine has been thoroughly overhauled with authentic Omega pistons, upgraded camshafts and essential Brooklands components such as a water pump and magneto ignition, resulting in a power output of approximately 50 hp. The original Brooklands radiator has been carefully restored, including a new honeycomb grille. The non-synchronized gearbox has also been overhauled and has the characteristic Brooklands shifter. A new large Le Mans fuel tank, made of aluminum, has been installed, complete with the recognizable quick-fill valve with metal wings as used in racing models. In addition, the axles, brakes and Hartford shock absorbers were revised. The car still runs on the original 6-hole wire wheels with historic Blockley tires. The Riley was owned by its last owner since 2014 and has been used in various rallies and races. With its very authentic details and sought-after specifications, this car is a great specimen that is excellent for a variety of rally’s and touring events. Are you interested? Please contact us.
