Description

History of the “Round Door”

1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom I
Aerodynamic Coupe by Jonckheere

One of the greatest and most beautiful coachbuilt pre-war cars is the “Round Door” Rolls-Royce. The story of the Rolls-Royce Phantom I that became the “Round Door” Aerodynamic Coupe by Jonckheere, started in 1925 when it was delivered new with a Hooper Cabriolet body to its first owner. It continued with this Hooper coachwork until 1934. This is when the cars new owner sent the car to Jonckheere of Belgium, to be fitted with the stunning aerodynamic coachwork that the car got its name from “Round Door”. Complete with twin sunroofs, the iconic round doors, a large tail fin, and a sloped version of the Rolls-Royce Pantheon radiator shell. This 1930's
One-off coachbuilt marvel is now on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum located in Los Angeles, CA. Since it was acquired by the Museum in 2001.
