Description

The Rolls-Royce Phantom I Springfield Brewster Sportster belongs to the generation of Rolls-Royce models that built upon the reputation of the 40/50 HP Silver Ghost. By the beginning of the last century, that car had gained such prestige that it was dubbed “the best car in the world,” a distinction that has had a lasting impact on the Rolls-Royce name. In 1925, the Silver Ghost was succeeded by the 40/50 HP New Phantom, later known as the Phantom I. The model marked the continued evolution of Rolls-Royce as a manufacturer of large, luxurious, and technically sophisticated automobiles.

For the American market, the Rolls-Royce Phantom I was assembled in Springfield, Massachusetts. This involved the chassis, engine, bulkhead, and related components, while the bodies were manufactured by specialized coachbuilders. Brewster, one of the leading American coachbuilders, was acquired by the Rolls-Royce factory in 1925, after which the company developed its own line for the Phantom chassis. This example was delivered new in 1929 to A.Y. Goyen of Concord, Massachusetts. Later, the car was owned by businessman and diplomat George Howard Earle III, who served as governor of Pennsylvania from 1934 to 1938 and was President Roosevelt’s special envoy to the Balkan countries.

In 1968, the car underwent a restoration to original specifications. It was sold to Germany in 1989 and is currently registered in Belgium.

This Phantom I was converted by Brewster into a Sportster body with a spacious layout and a relatively low roofline. The design combines the spacious feel of a limousine with more elongated, sporty lines. Features include a gray velour interior, a red-and-black color scheme, black spoked wheels with whitewall tires, an Everflex roof, an additional trunk at the rear, and large, offset headlights.

The vehicle is equipped with a 7,668 cc inline six-cylinder engine. The engine has been replaced in the past, and extensive maintenance was performed by LMB Racing in Belgium. The car remains in very original condition, carefully maintained and kept roadworthy since its 1968 restoration, with a visible patina that adds to its character.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom I Springfield Brewster Sportster combines an American Brewster body with the technical foundation of the Phantom I series and a documented history dating back to its delivery as new in 1929. It has a history of restoration and careful maintenance, a distinctive Sportster body, and a striking appearance.
