Description

In the 1960s, happiness was still very common. We got into our Volkswagen Beetle, Fiat 850, Opel Kadett, Renault 4 or Trabant P50 / 1 and drove to the beach for a portion of sun, sea and sand. Armed with an old tablecloth and a picnic basket, filled with cheese sandwiches, coffee and lemonade.
The misery of the post-war years was over and a new era dawned in the 1960s. Dreaming was allowed again.
Despite the Cuban Missile Crisis, the building of the Berlin Wall and the constant threat of nuclear war, many had a sense of satisfaction and financial security. At least within your own four walls. More and more families could afford a car due to increasing prosperity.
Bella macchina !!
With a total of 2.3 million units, the Fiat 850 is undeniably one of the most popular cars of its time. The big brother of the Fiat 600 was available as a Berlina, Coupé, Spider and even as a delivery van. In the almost ten years that the 850 was in production, by far the most of the Berlina were built. Seeing the charming little car with its self-supporting body and funky butt like this, you wouldn't say it was introduced in 1964. For this showcase on Dyler and to make you relive these wonderful times, we offer the 850 Special, delivered from March 1968, which has 47 sporty horsepower instead of the standard 34 or 37 hp. This beautiful, fully restored example dates from 2/26/1971. Initially, this copy had a yellow license plate, but that is of course not on a car from this period, so we have already ordered those beautiful blue plates with imposed letters for you.

The power of this Fiat 850 Special is provided by a rear-mounted four-cylinder with a capacity of 843 cc. The short-stroke engine was a further development of the 600 engine from 1955, which was already obsolete by the time the 850 was introduced. Nevertheless, it is a solidly constructed and enthusiastic engine that is not averse to touring. The basic construction of the 850 engine is based on the engine block of the Topolino from 1938. The engine was even used until 1985, in the Panda and the Uno. It is therefore a robust, reliable and economical engine. Long distances are therefore no problem in the light-footed Fiat. The pleasantly shifting, fully synchronized four-speed gearbox pairs well with the lively engine.

The chassis with its wishbones and transverse leaf spring at the front and swing axle with angled wishbones at the rear also adds to the lively character. The Fiat 850 Special is precise and with surprisingly high speed to navigate corners, whereby the weight of only 700 kilos of course also helps. He does not tilt or dive, the 850 does not make any crazy tricks. But if you kick it on its tail, it will eventually cause the distressing characteristic of rear-engined cars.

The brakes of the more than 135 km / h fast Fiat convince. It is one of the few cars from this era that has disc brakes at the front. Most other family cars didn't get disc brakes on the front wheels until much later. The indirect control is actually the only bummer. Despite the compact exterior dimensions, you don't even feel trapped behind the wheel and the space in the back seat is acceptable. You can fold the backrest, which can be used to create a large luggage space if desired. The four of you on holiday in the Fiat 850 Special? That wouldn't be a problem, because even the trunk of the just over 3.5 meter long 850 is quite okay.

When it comes to small, classic Fiats, everyone initially thinks of the 500, and then perhaps the 600. But with 2.3 million units produced, the Fiat 850 was also a real success. You can see the Fiat 850 as the bigger and more luxurious brother of the Fiat 600. The 850 was a versatile cart. It was available as a Berlina, Coupé and Spider, but also as a delivery van. Of all versions, the Berlina was by far the most popular. The power (47 hp) is coughed up by a rear-mounted, water-cooled four-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 843 cc.
This Fiat 850 Special is the perfect classic for beginners. The combination of robust technology, puristic driving pleasure and a favorable price tag make the Italian the ideal car for inexperienced mechanics with a limited budget. Repairs can easily be carried out yourself. The replacement parts are usually new, affordable and readily available. If you have questions regarding purchase and the purchase of replacement parts, one can contact several specialists and active club life can also offer a solution.
Much of the bodywork of the 850 Berlina is still available, sometimes even via the Fiat dealer. Unlike mirrors, emblems and bumpers, moldings are difficult to find. This also applies to sealing rubbers, but universal rubbers from specialists can offer a solution here. The disc brakes of the Fiat convince. It is one of the few cars of its time that has discs on the front. Most other family cars didn't get it until later.
