The Toyota Sports 800 was Toyota's first production sports car.
It went into production in 1965, with chassis code UP15. It used the mechanics of the «Publica 700», but with an increased displacement to 798cc and two carburettors, which gave the Sports 800 45 horsepower, enough to propel the light car to speeds of 160 km/h.
The body design by stylist Shozo Sato was among the most aerodynamic of the time and was also one of the first cars to use a 'targa' style roof.
With a total production of just 3,131 cars, only 300 were produced left-hand drive, mainly destined for the Okinawa market (which had been occupied by the Americans and where traffic moved on the right side of the road instead of the left like the rest of the road. Japan).
The Toyota Sports 800 is affectionately called the «Yota-Hachi» (ヨタハチ), which is a Japanese abbreviation for «Toyota 8».
