Description

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Classic Sale at CarFest 2026 on Saturday the 29th of August and Sunday the 30th of August at The Wing, Silverstone Circuit, NN12 8TN.

The Karmann Ghia was a true exercise in automotive synergy, involving Volkswagen, Carrozzeria Ghia, and coachbuilder Karmann. The 1960 model year was a pivotal transition period for the Type 14, benefiting from several major styling and performance updates introduced at the start of production.

The 1960 model featured an updated 1,192cc air-cooled boxer engine, boosting power output slightly to approximately 36 bhp. Completed in May 1960, this left-hand drive Type 14 Coupe was specified in Paprika Red (code L452) with body-colored interior features and Stone Beige upholstery. The exterior was complemented by a contrasting Charcoal roof section, chromed front and rear bumpers, and Deco strips along the flanks.

It was ordered new with options M355 ‘US Equipment,’ M139 ‘Sealed beam headlamps and red rear lamp lenses,’ and M951 ‘Ram protection.’ The car was imported to the UK in 2019 and registered with the DVLA in July 2021.

In 2019, it received a sympathetic preservation restoration by leading marque specialist Stephen Nolan of Wolfsburg VW, focusing on the body and chassis while retaining as much of the original paintwork as possible. Various original and used parts were sourced via Californian Classics in the UK, including a dashboard top panel, exterior aluminium trims, a replacement sealed beam headlight unit, original bumper over-riders, and new rubber body and window seals.

The car is supplied with a certificate of authenticity, an original instruction manual, import documents from California to the UK, the V5C registration document, and various parts invoices from the restoration.

Distinctively presented, this charming Karmann Ghia offers a unique opportunity for any air-cooled enthusiast seeking a show car or a one-of-a-kind cruiser.
