Description

The Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia 2+2 Coupé was developed in the 1950s as a passenger-oriented coupé based on the technology of the Volkswagen Beetle. The model resulted from a collaboration between Volkswagen, coachbuilder Karmann, and the Italian design house Ghia. Its low, streamlined design gave it a distinct character compared to standard Volkswagens of that period, while maintaining familiar technical foundations. The Karmann-Ghia occupied a niche between accessible technology and a more exclusive body style.

Production ran from 1955 to 1974, during which both the Type 14 coupe and convertible were introduced, followed later by the larger Type 34. The car remained in production for a long time because it held a unique position within the Volkswagen lineup without directly competing with sports cars. The 1974 Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia 2+2 Coupé belongs to the final years of production, marking the end of this model's run.

This particular Karmann-Ghia features significant technical modifications that deviate from the standard model. Its basic design makes it suitable for such modifications, as the body and chassis have a relatively simple layout. Consequently, examples with extensive modifications are common among enthusiasts of this model.

This Karmann-Ghia is equipped with a Porsche 2.2-liter engine featuring 48 Weber IDA carburetors and SMD ignition, producing approximately 180 horsepower. It has a Rancho transmission with a shift lock, disc brakes all around, and Porsche 17-inch Cup wheels. Porsche 914 seats have been installed, and the interior has been reupholstered by Newburry. Four-point seat belts are fitted.

The electrical system has been completely overhauled and rewired, including a GPS-based speedometer, an adjustable shift light, and a line lock that allows the front brakes to be locked via a button on the gearshift. The body is weld-free and fully coated in two-component epoxy. The car is registered in the Netherlands with historic blue license plates.

The total investment in this vehicle was 60,000 euros. It was driven after the engine initially only idled at purchase, completing the necessary test kilometers. Due to the parts used and the lowered front axle, the car features a distinctive technical configuration within the Karmann-Ghia platform.

This 1974 Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia 2+2 Coupé combines the classic Karmann-Ghia body with extensively modified mechanical components, including a Porsche 2.2-liter engine, Rancho transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, and various Porsche parts. It is registered in the Netherlands with historic blue license plates.

The car is being auctioned online by Classic Car Auctions. Bidding takes place in the Classic Sports Cars - Fijnaart auction, which is entirely online.
