Description

Did you know that the Volvo P1800 once began as a rather ambitious project for a brand best known for reliability and safety? After all, Volvo is primarily associated with sedans and station wagons. The P1800, on the other hand, is low-slung, elegant, and features lines that clearly didn’t originate solely in Scandinavia. The story begins in the late 1950s, when Volvo decided there was room for something different alongside its familiar models. Helmer Petterson, a name you may recognize from earlier Volvos, was brought in to help with the development. The first prototypes came from Italy, from Carrozzeria Frua. Production initially took place at Jensen in England, before everything was moved to Sweden. And there, the model was further developed into the version you know today. By the late 1960s, this Volvo received a major update. The displacement increased to 2.0 liters, and the car switched to fuel injection. From that point on, we refer to it as the P1800E.And that is exactly what you see here. Under the hood lies the 2.0-liter four-cylinder with fuel injection. It produces about 120 hp, which was more than adequate for its time. Just enough to keep the P1800 moving smoothly with traffic. Combined with the overdrive, you can drive long distances in a relaxed manner, keeping the RPM low. What immediately stands out about this specific example is how it has been restored. Not “over-restored,” but rather with respect for how the Volvo was originally intended. The weld points are still visible, exactly as they should be. With this restoration, the focus was clearly on preserving original details. The color scheme naturally contributes to the overall look. Steel blue, a typical color for that period, combined with a black leather interior. A timeless combination and exactly as it was delivered back then. And then there is something else that makes driving it just a little different. This example is equipped with power steering. Subtly integrated, it preserves the car’s character while making driving just a bit more comfortable. You’ll definitely notice the difference at lower speeds. So what you have here is a P1800E just as it was intended. Beautiful specifications, authentic execution, and restored with an eye for detail without losing its original charm. Are you interested? Contact Gallery Aaldering today.
