Volvo PV 544 Sport Type F 1965
This sport version has 95 hp and was restored starting in 2015. Many technical improvements have been made, including modern seats for greater comfort and a tow bar. The car features a unique burgundy metallic color.
It was owned by the first Dutch owner for over 30 years.
History
This Volvo PV 544, also known as the "Katterug," is a Type F sport version and one of the last models produced. In 1965, this iconic car—an evolution of the PV 444 introduced in 1944—was produced and delivered new in Sweden. In 1993, it was imported from Sweden and registered with a Dutch license plate in 1996 by Nordicar in Heerhugowaard. The car came into the possession of a Volvo enthusiast that same year, who has owned it ever since, for over 30 years.
The 1996 registration certificate is included. After restoring a Volvo Amazon, the owner decided in 2015 to restore this PV 544, despite it already being in good running condition and solid shape. The car was disassembled and restored, resulting in a technically excellent and visually unique vehicle. The restoration was a rewarding hobby, but due to age and physical limitations, a new owner can now enjoy this classic with modern sportiness and comfort.
Exterior
Choosing the color was a challenge, as the original 1965 Volvo red (color code 46) was not preferred. After a long search, a sparkling pearlescent metallic red from Alfa Romeo, "Rosso Competizione," was selected. This color pairs beautifully with dark anthracite-painted wheels, creating a sporty appearance.
The restoration prioritized reusing parts where possible. Much of the original condition was good, with chrome trim still present. The paintwork, windows, and lighting are in good condition. The panel gaps are well-aligned, indicating a damage-free history. A tow bar has been mounted at the rear.
The exterior features timeless, rounded shapes with distinctive lines. The car has a robust yet charming look, with flared fenders, a narrow grille, and a striking front end. Its compact build and classic proportions give it a sporty and distinctive character. The car comes with extra hubcaps and original trim pieces.
Interior
The interior was also carefully restored. The original plastic dashboard is upholstered in black calfskin. The front seats have been replaced with mechanically adjustable black leather seats from a BMW 3 Series. The interior is finished with black leather and subtle red accents.
The center console has been redesigned and finished in leather, including an armrest and cup holders. The floor is covered with rubber tiles to prevent moisture. With the rear seat in place, the car seats four. The headliner is in good condition. The trunk provides space for the spare tire.
Technical
During restoration, all layers of bitumen were removed to check for hidden rust. Affected areas were carefully repaired and fitted with new sheet metal. The bodywork proved to be exceptionally sturdy.
After extensive cleaning and scraping, the axles were addressed, parts replaced, and the vehicle rebuilt. The B18 engine block was completely overhauled at Peters Motorenrevisie in Epse. The reassembly process involved meticulous attention, improving known weak spots of the Katterug, including modifications to the rear shock absorber housings and the installation of a stainless steel heat shield between the exhaust and the body.
