The Auburn Speedster was an American car built by the Auburn Automobile Company of Auburn in the state of Indiana. The first Auburn 8 was launched in 1925 and renamed 8-88 in 1926 when it was equipped with a 68 BHP (69hp) Lycoming 4.8 side-valve engine. So it remained until 1930 when a 115 BHP engine was developed that also gave the Speedster 115 model its name. The rest of the car was basic. The suspension was all semi-elliptical springs, and after experiments with hydraulic brakes, the Auburn was fitted with mechanical brakes. The three-speed gearbox was incorporated into the engine. The flashy two-seater open bodywork designed by Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky recalled the tail of a boat and had a V-shaped windshield. In 1930 the 115 became the 125 and was advertised as a racing car with the comfort of an enclosed car; it had a 125BHP version of the Lycoming engine that allowed it to reach 100 mph.
Auburn's last memorable venture was the 851 Speedster. It was introduced in 1931 and was designed by Gordon Buehrig and built with ingenuity and thrift. It was a fairly simple car and the engine proved strong and reliable. The broad lines concealed interesting technical devices such as the Columbia dual-ratio rear axle (Columbia dual-ratio rear axle) controlled by a lever located near the steering wheel. In this way the three-speed gearbox became a six-speed transmission. In 1936 the 852 was introduced, identical to earlier models except for the 852 lettering on the radiator grille. The Auburn ceased production in 1937 but its boat-tail styling was revived on many cars in the following decades.
