The Austin-Healey 3000 MKII A is part of the final development phase of the large Austin-Healey models, built between 1959 and 1967. During this period, various technical changes occurred rapidly. In March 1961, the Austin-Healey 3000 Mark II was introduced as a further development of the earlier 3000, featuring three SU HS4 carburetors as standard and a modified camshaft. The 3000 series was a mainstay of the British sports car segment in the 1960s, with a strong focus on exports, particularly to the United States.
The Austin-Healey 3000 MKII A was introduced in 1962 as the successor to the MKII. This version reduced the number of carburetors to two SU HS6 units, partly because the three HS4 carburetors were difficult to synchronize. The MKII A was available as a two-seater BN7 and a four-seater BJ7. It combined the traditional long nose and muscular proportions of earlier Healeys with further refinements for ease of use.
The MKII A is often regarded as one of the most recognizable versions of the Austin-Healey 3000. Its distinctive features include a rounded windshield, hinged windows, and a convertible top without a separate frame. The classic dashboard was retained for the MKII A before being modified in the MKIII. This model represents a transitional phase within the series.
This Austin-Healey 3000 MKII A has been owned by the same individual for decades. It was fully restored in the early 1990s, during which the engine was modified for unleaded gasoline and the chassis was reinforced. The restoration is documented in a photo album. Since then, the car has been carefully maintained and used for various trips abroad.
The car features 15-inch 72-spoke wheels, a Moto-Lita leather sports steering wheel, a Works gearshift with an overdrive switch, Securon multi-point seat belts, a fire extinguisher, and a VDO vacuum gauge. Under the hood are an electric cooling fan, an aluminum valve cover, a high-output Flame Thrower ignition coil, and various upgrades. The underbody is painted in the body color, and the body panels fit excellently.
This 1962 Austin-Healey 3000 MKII A exemplifies the final development phase of the 3000 series, with characteristic bodywork and technical modifications. Restored in the 1990s, it has been well maintained and fitted with several upgrades. For a better understanding of this lot, attending the viewing day is recommended.
