Description

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at Supercar Fest 2026 on Saturday, May 16th, at Sywell Aerodrome, Sywell, Northampton, NN6 0BN.

The wonderfully dramatic BMW 8-Series Coupé was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989 and featured numerous innovations, including the first electronic fly-by-wire throttle, the first CAN bus system to reduce electrical complexity and weight, and the first BMW multi-link rear axle. Its commanding presence and luxurious interior made every journey special, appealing to a jet-set clientele.

The 850i was powered by a 5.0-litre all-alloy V12 engine producing 300bhp and 332lb/ft of torque. It could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 6.8 seconds and had an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Supplied new to The Royal House of Brunei and first registered as ‘BL 278’, this exceptional BMW 850i was completed on 19th February 1991. It was specified in timeless Granite Silver (237) over a well-preserved Black leather interior (0226). During its initial four years under Royal ownership, the car covered only 4,000 miles. Its current mileage remains under 20,000, reflecting decades of careful, considered ownership and meticulous maintenance.

The car remains wholly original, with factory-applied paintwork retaining a deep, consistent finish. The black leather interior is in outstanding condition, a testament to its sheltered life. Imported to the UK in 2002, it has seen only light, fair-weather use.

Its extensive and desirable specification includes Automatic Stability Control, electric memory seats with lumbar support, an electrically adjustable steering column, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, electric sunroof and rear blind, headlamp wash system, and correct turbine-style 16" alloy wheels. All features function as intended and present superbly.

This BMW 850i offers a rare combination of Royal provenance, low mileage, and outstanding originality. It would be a significant addition to any serious BMW collection or a curated assembly of fine motor cars.

The cherished registration ‘850 EMW’ was assigned by the current owner in 2009 and will remain with the vehicle. The car is accompanied by a comprehensive history file, including the original book pack, manuals, sales literature, invoices, MOT certificates, and supporting documentation, all evidencing diligent maintenance.

Suitable for concours or open-road use, this V12-powered BMW provides an exceptional driving experience.
