This 1940 International D-2 Woody Station Wagon is an absolutely stunning classic pre-war truck that has benefited from a comprehensive frame-off restoration.
With a history dating back to the mid-19th century, International Harvester began producing its first automobiles, known as "Auto-Wagons," in 1907. These early vehicles were light-duty trucks that complemented the company's agricultural implement business. By 1913, International focused solely on truck production. By 1929, International was America's largest truck producer, second only to Ford and Chevrolet.
In 1930, International rebranded its models with letter series, starting with the A-Series, followed by the B-Series in 1933. The introduction of the C-Series in 1934 brought more style, featuring a bright V-type aluminum grille and a slanted windshield. In October 1939, International debuted the 1940 D-Series models, replacing the C-Series. These trucks were notably stylish for their time, with V-type windshields, curvy pontoon fenders, and outstanding body lines. Despite their attractive design, International's market position slipped, being overtaken by Dodge as one of America's largest truck producers.
A small segment of International's light-duty trucks included the "Woody" station wagons, produced by custom coachbuilders such as M.P. Moller Inc., Baker-Raulang, and Burkett. These wagons served as taxis, school buses, and family transportation.
This particular International Woody Wagon has southern history and has undergone a thorough frame-off restoration under previous ownership. It is powered by a 213 cubic inch L-head inline 6-cylinder engine, producing 78 horsepower when new. The engine is equipped with a single-barrel carburetor and paired with a 3-speed manual transmission operated via a floor-mounted shifter. Exhaust exits through a single chrome-tipped tailpipe.
Despite being a commercial vehicle, this example is loaded with options. The front features amber-lens fog lamps atop an optional chrome bumper, enhancing its appearance. It rides on wide whitewall tires mounted on red-painted steel wheels with chrome beauty rings and hubcaps. A side-mounted matching spare tire adds both utility and style. A driver's side outside mirror improves visibility.
The rear is finished with an optional chrome bumper, taillights, and turn signals, giving it a modern touch. The all-steel body is refinished in International Creme paint, complemented by a black vinyl roof and exquisite wooden coachwork.
The interior is equally impressive, with a well-maintained and restored cabin that matches the exterior's classic appeal.
