Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport in general In the early 1920s, Vittorio Jano, Alfa Romeo's chief engineer, was given the task of designing an ultra-light, powerful car to propel Alfa Romeo to the forefront of the auto industry. The result was the 6C – a street, racing and sports car that proved its success and remained in production from 1925 to 1954. The Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 made its grand debut at the Salone dell'automobile di Milano in April 1925, causing much excitement. The new Alfa became an instant hit and went into production in 1927 with bodyën designed by Young and Touring. The sporty 6C underwent several innovations over the years, including dual camshafts and a more powerful 1750cc engine. Subsequently, the model triumphed in every event in which it participated in 1929, including several European Grand Prix and the Mille Miglia. The displacement was increased to 1900 cc in 1933 and to 2300 cc the following year. In 1934 Jano introduced a new chassis with hydraulic brakes, individual front suspension and a pendulum axle at the rear, significantly improving handling. In 1946 Alfa Romeo introduced the 6C 2500 Freccio d'Oro (Golden Arrow) – an aerodynamic five-seater, with bodywork by the Alfa design studio, heavily influenced by Touring of Milan. Jano's newly configured and race-developed 2500 engine, with double overhead camshaft, was available with ééone or three Weber carburetors. The 2,443 cc engine was mounted on a steel ladder-frame chassis with different wheelbase lengths, the most desirable being the SS or Super Sport, mounted on the shortest wheelbase in the series. The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 was ééone of the most expensive cars of its time and had such famous owners as Rita Hayworth, Prince Rainier of Monaco and King Farouk of Egypt. The 6C 2500 even made a guest appearance in The Godfather (1972). The combination of a fully independent suspension, a robust braking system, fast steering and an avant-garde, steering column-mounted gearshift lever ensured the 2500's prized place in the Alfa stable. The 1949 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500, with ééone wheel firmly rooted in Alfa's pre-war racing glory, heralded the arrival of the all-new, ultra-modern 1900, launched in 1950, and marked the end of an era for the Alfa Romeo brand. Our exampleThe Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport we offer here was designed to be the most streamlined and agile among its siblings, based on the shortest and lightest wheelbase Alfa offered. Although most 2500 models had Touring bodywork, this stunning example, with its iconic grille, features the beautiful Pinin Farina convertible bodywork.This car was delivered from the Alfa Romeo factory in August 1950 and was destined for the Swiss Alfa Romeo intermediary in Lugano, Switzerland. According to research by a previous owner, this particular 6C 2500 Pinin Farina convertible was the only one delivered in the distinctive ‘black over green’ color scheme, exactly as you see on the car today. In 1957, it was purchased at a garage in Genève by Parisian Monsieur Michel Pfau, presumably the second owner at the time. Pfau, an avid jazz enthusiast, attended jazz festivals with two friends in upscale destinations such as Cannes, Nice and Berlin. A photo of them, taken around the Cote d'Azur, is preserved in the car's impressive history file.Pfau owned it until 2013, when he sold the Alfa to Italian car specialist Franco Meiners of Bergamo, Italy. A restoration, carried out between 2006 and 2012 in Novara, Italië, included repainting it in the original black color and overhauling the technology in Turin, Italië. When Mr. Meiners owned it, the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport Pinin Farina convertible was exhibited at several Concours d'Elegance events and the 2014 Retromobile show in Paris. At the Retromobile, Mr. Meiners was approached by Monsieur Pfau's old jazz friends, with whom he had been photographed in the car many years earlier. Unfortunately, Monsieur Pfau had passed away a week vóór Retromobile, leaving his friends the proceeds from the sale of the car and instructing them to spend it on what they loved: attending jazz concerts.This Alfa Romeo was sold again in 2014. In the process, this Alfa Romeo moved to America and was acquired by its last owner. Since then, he has diligently maintained the car performing tasks such as ceramic coating the black paint, overhauling the master cylinder, tuning the impressive matching numbers DOHC, a six-cylinder engine with triple carburetor, and fitting new correct Michelin tires, down to the beautiful Borrani wire wheels. The Alfa Romeo is in immaculate condition, with a beautifully restored black exterior that complements the striking green leather interior and dash, complete with matching green tinted carpets. Underneath the dash is a heater correct for the time, finished with Bakelite knobs. The engine compartment is clean and correct, featuring the original chassis and matching nameplates. Thanks to Monsieur Pfau's meticulous administration, the impressive documentation dates back well over half a century and includes many restoration photos, a plethora of receipts and documents, and old photos of Pfau and his friends. The original owner's manual is present and the old original French license plates still adorn the car. Importantly, this example still has the original engine, which has also been confirmed by the Alfa Romeo 6C 2300-2500 registry.
