What a time capsule, this very disarming Daf 600 from 1960. Daf starts with the first passenger car at the beginning of the 1950s, when the production of trucks is now well underway. In 1958, the Dutch brand presents the 600 at the RAI in Amsterdam, with the now famous Variomatic automatic transmission. Due to the enormous attention for the model, scaled-up production only really gets underway in 1959, and not much later, in 1960, this very charming 600 rolls off the assembly line.A little below Antwerp, in Lier to be exact, this gray 600 is delivered new to its first owner. The car has a good life and little to suffer there for many years. In 2015, the 600 comes to the country where it was born, the Netherlands. Here, too, the Daf has always done well, keeping it a rare clean car. In the past, most of the car has had new paint but this has been done in such a neat way that it is almost unnoticeable. The beauty of it is that it allows the car to retain its original character. No overrestored car that is more beautiful than it ever left the factory but a car that seems to be untouched in the 62 (!) years that he drives around in Belgium and the Netherlands.The bodywork is therefore very good, with beautiful thin paintwork, excellent fits and doors that open and close as if it were a new car. We sometimes see that differently with cars in this class. The chrome work is neat, as are all the other parts, such as window rubbers, lighting parts and the small wheels. No to-do list for this Daf.The interior looks even more original than the exterior of the car. The upholstery could easily be the original although we can not prove it with documentation. The remaining, sparse controls all look original and in very clean condition. The interior breathes the atmosphere of the 1960s; we spontaneously imagine ourselves in the television series "Toen was geluk heel gewoon" (When happiness was quite common), although Nel Kooiman drove a canary yellow car. 'Coziness' is the right description of the atmosphere, even in this all-gray 600.Technically, the Daf is up to date and drives like the proverbial sunshine. Although the technology is not very complicated, it is still nice that everything works as it should and that is absolutely the case with this likeable car for the people. This makes the 600 a pleasure to drive around with, whether you want to tour quietly or want to investigate whether that Variomatic can écht as fast backwards as forwards.The Daf is already a beloved classic but we are sure that this Dutch car will only increase in appreciation.
