Description

1939 Daimler EL24Charlesworth Sports Saloon

Registration Numnber: 861HYK
Produced in 1939 & first registered in 1950 due to wartime interruption. One of four cars commissioned for Embassy staff in India, the first three were destroyed when the boat they were carried in was torpedoed en route to India. This one remained in the UK for finishing and was never exported. First registration was delayed until 1950 due to World War II factory bomb damage.

This Daimler EL14 Light Limousine is in really fine driving order.  The Straight Six 3.3 litre engine starts instantley & is a paragon of smoothness allowing the car to cruise at modern traffic speeds between 55 & 60 MPH. A complete rebuild, inside and out was done in 1998/1999 carried out by Classic Refinishes at a cost of close to £30,000. Photographic history shows the work undertaken. A good file of another history also accompanies this cherished car.  The car is thus in really fine order.  Drive is via a Wilson Pre-select box which is a pleasure to use making for effortless gear changes.

The maroon paint is in generally good order with some light patination of use, but polishes up quite well.  The interior is lovely deep brown leather throughout extending to the door cards.  Walnut Picnic tables are fitted to the rear seats.  This is a spacious comfortable car with a surprising turn of speed fora pre-war machine. I have to say it compares very favourably to equivalent Rolls Royces of the period.
