The Argentine, Alejandro Detomaso, was a businessman as well as a racing driver. His ambition was always to design a car himself. By founding Modena Detomaso Automobili in the late 1950s, he made his’n dream a reality. He had ééone goal in mind: to make his own sports car with his’s name on it. To accomplish this, he focused in the early stages on creatingëing prototypes and racing cars. In this way, he designed the first Formula One car for Frank Williams. Unlike his townsman Enzo Ferrari, Detomaso used his racing cars to finance the production of street cars. His first street car, the Vallelunga, equipped with a small four-cylinder engine, appeared about four years after his company was founded. Three years later, in 1966, Detomaso introduced the Mangusta. What are we talking about? The Mangusta supplied Detomaso with a 5 liter V8 engine from Ford, fitted with a ZF transaxle manual transmission. Giorgetto Giugiaro was responsible for the Mangusta's design. Thanks to its aerodynamic design, the Mangusta reached contemporary top speeds of 250 kilometers per hour. Unprecedented, of course! Production numbers remained relatively low. Only 401 examples of the Mangusta were built. It is nowadays a very sought-after classic, which is of course no surprise: with Italian styling and American engineering, it combines a fantatic package of specifications. Fun fact: the Mangusta's manual very specifically states what tire pressure is applicable for weather and driving conditions. For example, the driver should lower the tire pressure during rain and increase it during very sporty performance (over 210 km/h). Our Mangusta at Gallery Aaldering in Brummen concerns a rare version with European specifications and with the sought-after and more powerful 4.7 liter (289 ci) V8 with 305 hp. With this engine, the Mangusta has no less than 72 hp more than the 4.9 liter (302 ci) V8. In addition, this copy comes with the original manual and several invoices, which show that this Mangusta always received proper maintenance. The whole car is in very original condition. In addition, the bodywork is beautiful and well cared for. In the past, this Mangusta received new paint and although it has signs of use, the whole is still beautiful. The exterior looks neat with nice sheet metal and good fits. The trim and rims are also still in clean condition. The interior is also still very original and authentic and in nice condition. The carpets, along with the upholstery and the instrument panel with the clocks and switches are all still in nice condition. Sitting in a Mangusta is a beautiful experience. You sit low and in a sporty seating position. The 4.7 liter engine runs great and sounds like only an American V8 can. This example is equipped with an Ansa exhaust system so that the V8 sound comes into its own. The transmission shifts smoothly and the brakes are perfect. Technically, this Mangusta is in great shape. This is a beautiful Detomaso and very attractively priced. According to experts there are very few Mangusta's left. So the car is not only beautiful, but also extremely rare, making it an ideal classic for the collector. Are you interested in this rare Detomaso Mangusta?
