In the spring of 1961, a new era of sports cars was born, with the unveiling of what Enzo Ferrari dubbed “the most beautiful car in the world”, the Jaguar E-Type. With its sleek and curvaceously sculpted body and race-proven XK engine performance, the E-Type has continued to captivate auto enthusiasts and collectors across the globe. As one of the most sought-after automobiles ever produced, original purchasers of the model were met with fierce demand of such a new and revolutionary automobile, making these first generation E-Types the most desirable of all XKE iterations produced.
Today, the same seductive vehicle that captured the world’s attention as it did back in 1961 is now available and ready to be experienced by a new era of Jaguar faithful. High quality restorations that are befitting of such a magnificent example can take upwards of 4 years to complete and can cost upwards of $350,000.00
Very seldom do you find a first generation, show-level E-Type with this level of extraordinary restoration available for purchase, let alone one that is primed and ready for the highly competitive JCNA judging circuit. This XKE, numbered 169 in the first year production run, exhibits all of the early sought-after features like flat floors, welded louvers, and outside bonnet latches, amongst other notable features. This unique piece of Jaguar history is presented in its stunning original color combination of Opalescent Gunmetal and Red, as documented in its JDHT certificate. Master craftsmen performed a rotisserie-restoration back to factory standards, elevating the car to the highest of Show-level standards possible. Focused on the highest level of detail and correctness, the restoration team gave extreme attention to every aspect of the roadster, culminating in a painstaking restoration that would be a daunting task to even the most seasoned of auto restorers. This E-Type is sure to cause a sensation at future Concours events, making it an excellent choice for the discerning Jaguar collector demanding what could quite possibly be, the very best example available in the world today.
The Series 1 Jaguar XKE was introduced, initially for export only, in March 1961. The domestic market launch came four months later in July 1961. The cars at this time used the triple SU carbureted 3.8 liter 6-cylinder Jaguar XK6 engine from the XK150S. The first 300 cars built had flat floors and external hood (bonnet) latches. These cars are rare and more valuable. The outside bonnet latch is the most sought after of all the Series I E types. Only 500 external bonnet latch cars were made, of those, 385 were left-hand drive roadsters, 20 left hand drive coupes, 91 right hand drive roadsters, and 4 right-hand drive coupes. After that, the floors were dished to provide more leg room and the twin hood latches moved to inside the car.
