Description
Few military vehicles carry the presence and historical significance of an early World War II Dodge Command Car, and this 1941 Dodge WC6 is an outstanding frame-off restored example showing only 79 miles since completion. Built as a 1/2-ton 4x4 command and reconnaissance vehicle, the WC6 was designed to transport officers and communications personnel across terrain where ordinary passenger cars simply could not go. Today, surviving examples offer a fascinating connection to the vehicles that supported American forces during the early years of World War II.
This WC6 has undergone a comprehensive frame-off restoration and presents exceptionally well throughout. With just 79 miles accumulated since the work was completed, the restoration remains extremely fresh. Attention was given not only to the visible presentation but also to the mechanical and electrical systems, resulting in a vehicle that looks appropriate for its military origins while benefiting from extensive recent work.
The Dodge Command Car rides on a rugged four-wheel-drive chassis designed specifically for demanding military service. Power is delivered through a four-speed manual transmission and a single-speed transfer case with a front axle disconnect. The 4.89:1 axle gearing provides the low-speed pulling ability expected from a military reconnaissance vehicle, while approximately nine inches of ground clearance helps provide capability away from paved roads.
Its suspension is appropriately heavy duty, using rigid front and rear axles supported by semi-elliptic leaf springs. Hydraulic brakes provide stopping power, while the clutch uses a traditional dry-plate design. The truck retains its 6-volt electrical system, maintaining the period-correct character of the vehicle.
As part of the restoration, the wiring was replaced and the gauges were restored, two important areas on any vintage military vehicle. The result is a clean, functional dashboard that retains the straightforward, purpose-built appearance intended by Dodge and the U.S. military. A blackout light, or B.O. light, is also fitted, an important military detail designed to allow limited nighttime operation while reducing visibility to enemy forces.
The open command-car body gives the WC6 a presence unlike almost anything else from the period. New canvas has been installed, providing a fresh appearance while remaining true to the utilitarian design of the original vehicle. At the rear, a shovel and axe are properly mounted, adding to the authentic military presentation and reinforcing the practical nature of these vehicles in the field.
Unlike a civilian truck adapted after the fact, the WC6 was purpose-built as a command and reconnaissance vehicle. Its open seating arrangement, four-wheel-drive chassis, and compact dimensions made it useful for transporting personnel through difficult terrain while maintaining better mobility than larger military trucks. That combination has made Command Cars especially desirable among military vehicle collectors.
This example is best appreciated as a high-quality restoration rather than an unrestored artifact. The frame-off work, restored instrumentation, new wiring, fresh canvas, and extremely limited post-restoration mileage make it particularly appealing for someone looking for a military vehicle that presents exceptionally well without immediately requiring another round of restoration work.
With only 79 miles since completion, authentic military equipment, four-wheel drive, a four-speed manual transmission, restored gauges, new canvas, and excellent overall presentation, this 1941 Dodge WC6 WWII Command Car represents an impressive opportunity to own a distinctive piece of American military history. It is equally suited for shows, military vehicle events, parades, historical displays, or simply preservation as an important example of Dodge's wartime engineering.
