“Donkervoort D8 – No compromises. Drive like you live.”
There are fast cars, and then there are honest cars. The Donkervoort D8 undoubtedly belongs to the latter category, and on a good day, very much to both. Hand-built in Nieuw-Loosdrecht by a small team with little interest in compromise, the D8 is one of those rare machines designed with a single purpose: to connect the driver to the road. No unnecessary weight, no unnecessary technology, no superfluous distractions. Just a steel tubular chassis, lightweight bodywork, and an engine mounted so close to you that it feels more like a conversation partner than a mechanical component.
The D8 Zetec, powered by Ford’s proven and dependable Zetec four-cylinder engine, was Donkervoort’s answer to a question very few others were asking: what happens when you combine a reliable, highly tuneable engine with one of the lightest sports cars in Europe? The result is a car that effortlessly leaves far more expensive machinery behind on a twisting road.
About this car
This 1997 Donkervoort D8 Zetec was originally delivered new in the Netherlands and has remained within the same enthusiastic family ever since.
Finished in British Racing Green with a brown interior, it carries a specification perfectly suited to the honest and purpose-driven nature of the car.
What sets this particular D8 apart is the level of development carried out on the Zetec engine. The car features a carefully selected range of performance upgrades, including polished cam covers, a modified ECU, revised intake trumpets and intake manifold, faster camshafts with adjustable cam gears, and a Reverie carbon airbox. The result is a sharper, more eager power delivery from an engine that already loves to rev in standard form.
Maintained by a specialist and presented in strong mechanical condition, the car has recently received servicing. The soft top is also included for those inevitable moments when the Dutch weather decides to make itself known.
This is a pure analogue driver’s car: lightweight, direct, track-ready, and road legal. Built in Nieuw-Loosdrecht during a period when Donkervoort still adhered to the principle that things become better simply by doing them properly, however difficult that may be.
When designing the Donkervoort D8, comfort and safety were also given careful consideration. Power comes from a four-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. The leather upholstery enhances the car’s refined appearance, while the supportive sports seats keep you firmly in place through tighter corners. Additional features include 17-inch alloy wheels and a sports exhaust.
