Description

1960 Bentley S2 Continental by HJ Mulliner

We realise that we are lucky, to work with some very outstanding cars in our showrooms and Bentley Continental's from the 1950' and 1960's are some of the most beautiful and well engineered cars available

Some of these cars stand out more than others – this S2 Continental 2 door by H J Mulliner is one of those

Delivered in 1960 to Mr Morton of The Anchor Glass Co Ltd, Brent Cross (the site of the now famous Shopping Centre) and then purchased by the second only in 1963 by Mr G R Bates, Warwickshire

He had the car looked after by Rolls-Royce Ltd and in 1968 he prepared her for his move to the Channel Islands, where he obviously intended to stay for a long while

Whilst preparing BC49 AR at HJ Mulliner / RRMC in London he requested that they update his car to the S3 specification to include the quad headlamps and front wings

By this time the S3 was no longer available, hence the update to his personal car

Only 7 original S3 2 door HJ Mulliner coupes were produced, so this is a very rare upgrade – as the S3 was not available to be ordered Mr Bates ordered a new Corniche to sit alongside the updated S2 in his motor house in Jersey through St Helier Garages

St Helier Garages looked after the updated S2 all through his time in Jersey over the next 40 years and by this time the original mileage had risen to only 70.000

Brought back to London after Mr Bates ownership, she was re-registered back in the UK and after such little usage, mostly in Jersey of course she was treated to a top end overhaul of the engine to clean out the carbonization to the vales and tappets

Since when she had been transferred to her third owner – living in Belgravia where he keeps half a dozen Bentley's / Rolls-Royce's from the fifties and sixties, all of whom we care for on his behalf

I can only suggest that this beauty, still to the original specification, with factory veneers, and of course the leather to the door cards and seating, is as close to an original period piece as you could wish to find

Simply extra ordinary
