Description

Suppose you are BMW in the 1950s and you see the eyes of the whole world on your arch-rival Mercedes-Benz, thanks to the beautiful 300SL Gullwing, what do you do? You listen to your importer in the United States, Max Hofmann, and you then commission top designer Albrecht von Goertz to develop a Gran Turismo as well as a beautiful roadster. That assignment eventually resulted in the BMW 503 and the BMW 507. It became a "money no object" project by BMW and an absolute "tour du force" to show the world what it was capable of. Only the very best was good enough. The result should be there. The BMW 507 is still seen as one of the most beautiful cars ever and the BMW 503 was also very enthusiastically received and regarded by connoisseurs such as Batista Pinin Farina herself as the more beautiful car of the two. The beautiful Gran Turismo 2+2 was equipped by the Bayerische Motor Werke with a V8 engine that produces 140 hp and is coupled to a manual transmission with four gears. Max Hoffman had promised BMW that he could sell thousands of them if the price was around the D-mark 12,500. Because only the very best was good enough for the BMW 503, the price was sharply higher and the car was introduced at a price of D-Mark 29,500, - considerably higher than Hofman had desired. Although the BMW 503 was a top product in all respects, sales were very disappointing due to the high price. BMW made huge losses and pulled the plug on the project in March 1959. Only 413 BMW 503s were built in total. The BMW 503 is therefore a very rare appearance today. This example comes from Germany and is in very good condition. The car has been restored in the past and has not driven much since then.

The body is in beautiful condition with tight and thin sheet metal and correct fits. The chrome parts are also in good condition. The two-tone paint in "Dark Blue and Cream" is in good condition with only some light signs of wear. The interior is covered with beautiful beige carpet and beige colored leather. Both the leather and the carpets are in very good condition with a beautiful patina. The instruments as well as all controls are in very good condition and function exactly as you would expect. This BMW 503 still has its original engine. That makes this BMW 503 a matching numbers example. Both the engine and gearbox function very well thanks to recent major maintenance. At the end of 2019, extensive work was carried out to keep the technology in top condition. As soon as you turn the key, you immediately understand that this BMW 503 is one of the masterpieces in German automotive history. The car drives superbly and the V8 engine in the front sounds wonderfully subdued. This is one of those cars that everyone objectively understands that it was not a top seller at the time, which makes it an even more beloved classic today. A rare opportunity to buy a very rare BMW 503 in a beautiful condition with ditto color scheme.
